life of an intern

November 10, 2009

Check out this desk:

This is where I am going to be spending countless hours this week, as the magazine I work for is about to go to print. woo hoo!
Note the coffee mug.. it will be refilled on the regular.
And the snacks.. they are unfortunately diminishing at a fast rate.
This is going to be a long night but the good thing is that I enjoy it. I would much rather be here, writing and editing articles, than at the law firm doing boring deposition summaries.
Sigh I am one step closer to figuring out my life.
Why does the magazine industry have be in such shambles though?
What do you do/want to do? And do you like it?
I need some inspiration!

  4. what kind of magazine do you work for?
    {are you able to say which one?}
in my head, i picture that you have a pretty glamorous intern gig going on!

it must be interesting having an inside look at the magazine industry as it is falling apart. i guess blogging in the new frontier - so looks like you're heading in the right direction!

i DO like what i do/what i'm studying {teaching} but there still are a billion other things i want to study + pursue {photography + writing + pyschology + linguistics etc etc} i'm really not sure how to pursue everything i want to in this short little life...

    xo

  7. I am a graphic designer/photograper for a large engineering company (cool job, not an inspiring place to work though and boring projects)and in school to get my masters in marketing communications. I hope to one day be an art director or open my own small boutique ad company

  10. yay, i'm so happy for you that you're doing something you enjoy! it is quite sad that the magazine and newspaper industries are falling by the wayside, but ever since the internet took over, i'm not sure if there's any way we can go back. i mean, i LOVE holding the actual paper or mag in my hands, there's nothing quite like it.

i'm not sure what i want to do, which is my main problem. i am definitely a creative, artsy person, but i feel like i could be happy doing any number of other things. i basically want to do something that requires me to be up and about, and not trapped in a cubicle!

  11. I know, went do we ever have it completely figured out? I have been to school for 3 seperate things...all of which are completely different.
One lands me in the hospital all day, one lands me behind a computer all day- graphic design and the other is transcribing braille and now I have my own business making baby bows, tutus, shirts etc. And when my Miss Priss goes off to school (saying we only have one child) I will finish the 18 months to become a Sonography tech (doing ultrasounds). Then maybe just maybe I'll have it figured out. But at the end of the day, you just have to be happy with what you are doing, because that is all that really matters! :)

  12. Glad you're getting closer. I hope you work close to a Starbucks!!

I've loved and hated being a financial analyst about equally over the past few years. I work with good people in a great industry now, and I think that can make all of the difference! If you enjoy what you're doing, you're gonna be good at it! Good luck!

  15. I commend you for going after your dreams! I abandoned my dreams of law school to be a stay at home mom with the dude. I don't regret it for a second. Next step is to make some money from home doing something I'm passionate about. I'm working on it! You go girl! I really hope glossies rebound, because I don't go to their websites. I can't take the laptop in my bubble bath. ah ah
