weekend update and SURPRISE!

January 11, 2010

Well I'm sad the weekend has come and gone but I feel somewhat accomplished. Friday night we stayed in and watched Sherlock Holmes. Afterward Matthew and I danced a little Irish jig to the ending credits {yeah we're weird}. Saturday was a comedy of errors..supposed to see It's Complicated but the couple we were going with didn't know we were supposed to reserve tickets online for the theater. Also supposed to make Mexican food but ending up doing that Sunday night. But had a lazy Saturday morning with brunch at King's Road Cafe, bought crafting supplies, cut Matthew's hair {if you follow on Twitter you know how that went..}, completed my collection of LOST DVDs {on a super sale at Target}, started Dexter Season 3 and fell in love with Cavalier King Charles puppies! All in all a nice weekend!

So without further ado...my surprise for all of you. It rhymes with shmiveaway. Yes, I think that means it's a GIVEAWAY!

I am so excited to announce that I am giving away four Bare Escentuals eye shadows! I am starting to get into the bare mineral makeup and Bare Escentuals is the best. Once you get the hang of the loose powders it's really fun {and good for you}! Also, because you guys rock I'm giving four away to TWO of you!

Clockwise from left: Shantung {deep berry}, Humor {brown gold}, Mermaid {dark blue green}, and Soft Focus Savvy {peach cranberry}

So.. if you would like to be entered, comment below with a funny makeup {or fashion} faux pas. Mine is a funny story from my freshman year in high school. The guy I really liked came up to me to say hi {!} and within a second he was like, "Whoah Mara are you ok? Did you get into a fight or something?" I looked in my locker mirror and saw my blue eyeshadow had fallen under my eye and it actually looked like I had a black eye. So embarrassing!

I'll be drawing the lucky two winners on Friday! To get an extra entry let me know you're a follower and/or if you blog/tweet about it. So many chances to win these gorgeous eyeshadows! Good luck and Happy Monday!

  1. Hmmmm Fashion Faux Pas?? When Men wear the denim on denim-( Very Jay Leno...) LOL I just don't like it, I would rather see him in a suit you know? Maybe I'm just being mean.

    Also- YAY giveaway!!!

  2. Haha what a fun and funny weekend you had! And a blog giveaway - hooray! My make-up faux pas actually happened a few weeks ago. I put spot concealer on my face to cover a few pimples but forgot to blend in or put foundation on top (it was a busy morning). I noticed some people giving me weird looks on the T but it wasn't until I made it to work that a co-worker told me of my polka-dotted face!! Sigh! I need all the make-up help I can get!

  3. Oh no for the shadow smear...quick fix, yet embarassing i'm sure. I'd have to say mine would be...my eyeshadow {black at the time-smokey eye} decided to cause a ring in the crease and boy did it stand out :(
Great giveaway hun. I want to know how the haircut went...do tell :)

  4. Sounds like a fun weekend! I love Mexican food :) Make-up faux pas? I regularly get so distracted that I leave the house without finishing my makeup, for example I'll only put eye liner on 1 eye :)

  5. Mine is actually a hair dye faux pas... hope that's okay!

The day before my senior year of HS was to start I decided I wanted to dye my hair with Herbal Essences hair dye. I'd dyed my hair before and never had a problem.

Well, 30 minutes later I had orange hair. As in PUMPKIN orange. The hair color was SUPPOSED to be a reddish brown.

Needless to say, I was horrified. My mom ran out to buy new dye and after 2 applications I ended up with dark red - better than orange but still a horrifying experience.

  6. Great Giveaway!!

Hrmm one time, in elementary school I had horribly chapped lips. So I put some much chapstick on that the whole bottom half of my face was covered in a glaze of Chapstick *medicated* of course. So on the bus ride home, one of the older "cool kids" asked me if I "had enough on". I will never ever forget that moment. I'm going to stick to keeping chapstick on my lips from now on.

    P.S I'm a follower.. :)

  7. I feel like every time I wear makeup, I'm making a faux pas- at twenty-four, I'm JUST starting to get the hang of it.

  8. Oh I like this giveaway! Mine would be a fashion faux-pas! When I was in high school, I went to a private school and we had to wear skirts! It just so happened on this day, that I forgot my shortie shorts underneath and was sitting at a picnic table outside. Somehow, my shoelace got wrapped around the bolt on the picnic table and when I went to get up, I totally fell backwards and ended up with both legs in the air over the bench! Awesome and embarrassing!

    I'm a follower too!

  9. Lol yay for the giveaway I've never tried the eye makeup from BE but I've been a fan of the foundation for awhile. BTW, I loved the music in Sherlock Holmes too! I'd say nail polish in guys only in LA right? Hee hee oh and you know I'm a follower.

  10. sounds like a fun weekend! sean and i do little jigs all the time too :) and what a neat giveaway! my biggest faux-pas was probably overdoing the whole white eye-liner thing in jr. high. oops!

  11. Fashion faux pas...cutting my own bangs in junior high one day. After I cut them I noticed they were uneven, so I tried to even them out, but they just kept looking uneven, and eventually I ended up with bangs about an inch long.

  12. So sad you didn't see It's Complicated! Need to see it soon for sure.
I'm such a make up novice. I need some serious help. I'm that girl that should be wearing makeup but doesn't know how. And I'm especially scared to talk to any of the makeup girls so I don't think I'll ever get the help I need! What 28 year old is scared of the girls at the make up counter?! Ugh. ME. :)

  14. Yay! Your first giveaway! I keep meaning to do this but not enough followers really. My mom would end up winning or something :) I use to wear my hair in a side pony braided in 3 braids. It last a year or so from 7-8. I think I rocked it though!

  16. Wow this is a great giveaway, M!! (And Cavi King Charles pups are my FAVORITE breed!!)

Let's see...bad makeup issue: The first time I attended Bikram yoga I forgot to remove my eye makeup first. When I went to the bathroom after class, my mascara was halfway down my cheeks. Awesome. I have never made that mistake again.

Oh and of course you know I'm a follower.

  17. Make up faux pas... pretty sure I have a few. But the one that sticks out the best is when my girlfriend noticed that I hadn't rubbed all my foundation in properly. We were at a wedding, and ummmmm I basically went the whole afternoon with a big line down my jaw line.
    How many people saw that?!

    Happy Monday my friend!!

this is such a good giveaway. i've never used bare escentuals cause i'm cheap and rarely wear much makeup anyway, but my mom always rants and raves about it, and she always does look rather glowing, so perhaps she's onto something...and apparently you are too :).

  21. My story isn't that much of a faux-pas, more like recurring bad luck. See, I am a big fan of lipgloss. I especially love Mac lipglasses, or the Lancôme Juicy Tubes. And let me tell you, those are sticky. Well it just so happens that every time I wear one of them, it's a windy day outside and my hair gets stuck on my lips, getting lipgloss pretty much all over my face.
Needless to say I now usually wear chapstick only when the weather isn't perfect ;-)

  24. I've always wanted to try BE eyeshadow! I have the foundation and love it.

My biggest makeup faux pas was trying that new Maybelline 24 hour foundation. I am really pale, and although I bought the lightest shade, I still looked orange. I didn't have time to go back home to wash my face and that makeup really does stay on--it will not come off with just water. Ugh!

  25. PS I am also a follower of your cute cute blog!

if you're the president of my fan club, i probably should win right?

my biggest make-up faux pas is that i didn't wear any make-up at all for a really.long.time. does that count?

and of course i'm a follower. but you knew that already!

    XOXO

  27. Oh my goodness! Best. Giveaway. EVER!!! PS-LOVE King cavaliers!! SO cute!
Please enter me! My makeup faux pas happened in 8th grade. It was all the rage back then to give yourself a fresh, doe-eyed look by applying white eyeliner... well, I was running late one day and put my makeup on while on the bus, When I got to school, my crush's locker was next to mine so I headed over for our morning chat. He took one look at me and asked if it was halloween because I looked like I was trying to immitate a chipmunk!
My facination with white eyeliner ended after that.....

  28. Mara, I'm so bad... when I saw the Bare Escentuals give-away, I didn't read the entire post and jump to the comments part AT ONCE. Hahaha! I love Bare Escentuals... I use them and I really really like the product.

I am a follower of course.

My make-up faux pas... I was so made-up with mascara and all (not waterproof) for a flight from home just a few days ago. I didn't consider that I will be crying when I leave my boys behind. So I was crying the entire trip to the airport. As soon as we got off the car, my kids were laughing like crazy. I asked them, "are you happy that I am leaving?" They answered: "No mom, we're happy because you look like your normal self again." WTF? What is normal for these rascals? Normal for them is when their mom looks funny. I really looked like a ghost with smeared mascara.

  29. Fashion Faux Pas... Lipstick on your teeth. I now stick to lip gloss because I like the shine. However, no matter what the occasion lipstick on your white pearlies is never EVER ok. I do love red lipstick and when I decide to be adventurous I make sure to BLOT, BLOT, BLOT!!! What a great giveaway!! Hope your Monday is fabulous!! xo

  30. WOW... what a great giveaway.. so generous... I've wanted to try this..

Mine story is simular to yours... I used to always put black in the crease of my eye, to give that dark cat eye look... Well, I was in a rush one morning, and hurried and did it.. When I got to class, my teacher asked me to stay after class to talk, so i did... She then asked me why I had a black eye, and if my parents had anything to do with it.. it was so embarrasing!!!

  31. love these shadows!!
my fashion faux pas- once I went to an interview in a brand new shirt. I thought I took off the sticker and threw it away, until after the interview I went to the bathroom and discovered the sticker on my butt! So embarrassing. Hope they didn't see it when I walked out of the office!!

  32. What a great giveaway. I have a pretty funny story. In high school I started wearing makeup and one day I was over at my friend's house when her parents got home from work. After talking to them for a bit her dad looked at me and said: "are you wearing makeup?" I really didn't know what to say so I said "yes." He then proceeded to ask me what kind of makeup, how I did it, and if I would teach his daughter how to wear makeup. That was probably more embarrassing for her than me, so it's not really my faux pas, but it's a funny story nonetheless.

  33. One fashion faux that I loathe is the super-duper thick eye liner. I mean you can really tell when someone is wanting it to be that way, and when someone just can't apply make-up!

    BTW, I'm a follower too :).

  34. i love, love bare escentuals! such a great giveaway! also, totally having a LOST marathon right now (catching up on the last 2 seasons) I kinda forgot how crazy it is! make up faux pas? well i'm short so i come up to about Z's mid-chest level and i am constantly getting makeup all over his shirts when i hug him because i burrow my face in his chest. i absolutely hate it because then i have to stare at an eye level makeup smear on his shirts until he changes but it happens all the time!

  35. Sorry your weekend didn't go as particularly planned but it sounds like you had a good time anyway :)

Such a generous giveaway! I never put much on my eyes before but am beginning to get seriously addicted recently.

My story is not really a story, more of a secret: When I call in sick to work.. the next day I'll go to work with NO make up and it really does look like im sick :P works every time!

  36. What a generous giveaway-Thank You! I *L*O*V*E* Bare Minerals! I started wearing the foundation about a year ago + I'd never go back! XO!

  37. Ok, cannot believe I am admitting this story.

Back in high school I used to pluck my own eyebrows, and you know what its like to think something looks great and in reality it doesnt (that is beside the point). One time I plucked off half of my eyebrow by accident and I needed to pencil in the rest. I went out to buy a pencil and penciled it in before school. A guy that I liked came up to me and asked why my eyebrow was blue... Turns out I had accidentally bought navy eye pencil. Yikes.

    Best,

    Hannah Katy

  44. Anyone who has ever been in a recital or a show knows the importance of Make-up. I have been in ice skating shows since before I was allowed to wear make up on a daily basis. You would have to have bright red lips and they would cake on the eyeshadows and blush. needless to say I was never very good at putting on make up. I'm afraid that I'll look like i'm about to perfom a show! usually when I am going out or need to add more make up than usual, i throw the little make up I have into my purse and head over to my friends apartment for some cockatails and make up. because my make up is so old, my friends usually end up using theirs on me. I really need to get in the loop!

  45. Ooooh what a lovely giveaway! I'm keeping my fingers crossed!!

My biggest and most frequent faux pas.... I regularly get green leavy veg stuck between my teeth... and no one tells me that it's stuck there!! Why don't you tell me people??!! I always spot it a while after in the bathroom...

    ergh!

Where to even start with the makeup faux-pas stories... I've always loved makeup so I've got a few "no-no" looks I've gone through, haha! In high school I would wear bright pink eyeshadow and dark brown lipstick. Um... no. Never again, haha!

  53. Oh too funny! :) Well, never had a makeup faux pas. BUT have had many a fashion disaster.
I used to wear tight leggings with big knit shirts. Back in '04 this was not the hight of fashion. I even skipped out on being with my good buddies one night so I could wear this awful outfit to a meeting with old ladies! (I don't know... Maybe they thought I was cute...? Gag.)

    Fingers crossed! Xoxo-

  54. I have a funny hair story, does that count? I went to see a band in Brooklyn. I was at the front of the stage. It was crazy. I ended up having security pull me out of the crowd. I went in the bathroom & I had lost some hair, it was wicked tangled & my mascara was dripping down my face. I guess it is a make up story. dramaqueensmum@gmail.com

  56. Oh what a fun weekend! I just love you guys...if that's possible without meeting :)

    Anyway, a makeup story...
I had been dating my boyfriend for about 6 months and we were headed to the movies. I thought I would apply a little more mascara on the way there...but ended up poking myself in the eye, smearing mascara on my face and making my eye water....half of my face looked like it had a fight with all of the water colors mixed together!!! I fixed it :), but it's funny thinking about how I thought it would ruin the night!!
    :)
    Fun giveaway...I love eyeshadow!

  57. My worst make up accident was unfortunately during my senior picture photo shoot. The night before, my mom and I bought me some new makeup for the picture. I went to the photo shoot, and everything was peachy. THEN, went the photos came back, there was a clear line on my jaw. I had worn a few shades too dark foundation. The good thing is that the photo shoot was split into two different days. I ended up picking a lot of pictures from my second photo shoot. Haha I guess I thought I was tanner than I really was (a common occurrence)!

  58. Soo pretty! A very interesting weekend!!

Hmm...I have a hair story...There was a year when I decided to bleach my hair. The thing is my brother and I were mucking around and he put the bleach in my hair and we wrapped it up in foil.

The thing is I left it in for too long so my hair was 4 or 5 shades lighter than I wanted. Plus it was completely uneven and just looked horrible. I had to cut my hair really short to make it look more normal :(

Ok, now for my makeup faux pas/ I was in 6th grade, it was my birthday party, every girl who came got a goodie bag full of makeup and nail polish...wet n wild of course! (some of the parents were nervous about this). Well, at some point in the evening I decided I wanted glitter eyeshadow and was in desperate need for glitter. In a fashion bind I decided the best thing to do would be to put my glitter nail polish on my eyelids. Upon application my eyes burned so much I began to cry and could not remove it, which lead to my next major makeup faux pas which was to put nail polish remover on my eyelids....I was blind for 10 minutes hysterical in front of all my friends, lesson learned.

  62. I LOVE Bare Escentuals!

When I was in college I was in a play, performing as a swing dancer. I was supposed to be a lady of the evening, so my makeup was even heavier than they normally do it on stage. After our first big show we all decided to go out to celebrate. I was running about trying to get everything ready for the next night and left to meet up with my friends. I got to the restaurant and was flirting up a storm with some guys when I caught a glimps of myself in a mirror. I had totally forgotten to take off my makeup! I looked like a southern baptist televangelist!

  63. I will have to give you a recent fashion faux pas.

So I am a high school teacher. This requires me most of the time to dress, as like to say, "without a silhouette." Let's just say I try not to have high school boys think like high school boys whilst I teach.

Anyway, I was lecturing about something (phenomenally important ;) ) and began to rest against a ledge/radiator thing in the classroom (as is my custom.)
    I feel a draft.
    My pants.
Hooked on some rusty hook on the top of radiator.
I move forward slightly while continuing to talk.
    RRRRRRIIIIIIIPPPPPPPPPP.
My pants ripped from right under my bum about 6 inches down.

I suddenly created a pop quiz and forced the students to look straight ahead as I gave them questions from the back of the room.

I shimmied out and ran to the bathroom. I couldn't fix the problem and returned to the class to lecture from behind the room for the rest of the period.

I know keep a sewing kit ON MY PERSON.

    :)

  64. My make-up oops story would be when I put on one of those double coat mascara, except forgetting to wear the second coat!
My lashes looked so halloween in bizarre white furry collagens. I spent the whole day forcing myself to think that no one notices. I'm sure couple of them did, because I caught their expression on their face. lol

So looking forward to the giveaway!! love you!
