meet Ginger!

May 17, 2010

Yep, it's been a long time coming. I've been puppy crazy for over a year now but it all started about a month ago when I saw this Apple iPhone commercial. I downloaded the petfinder app and the first time I used it I saw one of Ginger's siblings. I hurried home to fill out my application and later that week I learned from the rescue that I was approved and could come see them.

Ginger is the runt of the litter and so sweet. Last night was a little rough for the both of us {as to be expected}. It was her first night away from her mom and siblings and she's still getting used to the crate. The crying, whimpering, howling, and barking got to me a little. But I stood strong, refused to bring her in the bed and eventually she tired herself out. I am so exhausted today because I don't think I fully fell asleep last night and then I woke up early this morning to take her out and she wouldn't get back to bed. I can only imagine how tough a baby would be. But on the upside babies can't walk and you don't need to worry about potty training right away! I know it's going to be a lot of work but I'm excited. It's the perfect time since I'm not really working and can spend lots of time with her. I'll take some cuter pictures of her this week I just wanted to share the news and introduce her to everyone!

Also, anyone with puppy tips {housebreaking, crate or obedience trainings} please share! I've been reading lots of books but the more knowledge the better! xox

  3. Oh my goodness I LOVE her!!!!! She's so darling and what a cute name!!!!!! Congrats on the new furry bundle of joy!!! I recommend having lots of toys to chew on and establish toy from furniture as early as possible. :)

  4. Oh she's gorgeous!! I have no clue about puppy training but I hope she settles in with you quickly. Sleepless nights aren't fun!

  5. She is adorable and I am so excited for you!!

I'm glad to hear you're crate training her. That's the fastest and easiest way to potty-train them, and it's the best way to keep them safe and your home damage-free. A lot of people (including my very nosy parents and my very opinionated best friend) will tell you it's "cruel" to have them crated for hours on end, especially overnight, but as long as they have water, toys, and a blanket in there, the crate acts as a safe space that they're familiar with and comfortable in.

I can't wait to watch her grow up!

  6. She's the cutest! My only advice is to avoid pee pads . . . once the puppies start using them, they get all confused and it's hard to get them to stop going in the house. Congrats on your new precious addition!

  7. Awwwww, Mara, she is so precious!! I love her!! Crate training is definitely best. My puppy just turned a year old and as soon as I got her I started crate training her and she LOVES her crate! Hmmmmm, tips? Always take her out when she wakes up from a nap, and anytime she uses the bathroom outside give her a treat. That will help her associate going outside with doing something good and treat-worthy :) Yay for new puppies!

  8. So darling. Congratulations! Stay strong. I have two dogs in my bed. That's another thing. Don't get a 2nd dog to keep your first company. And most important for big dogs...train them on loose leash walking so they're not dragging you around.

    Good luck!

  9. good for you, girl! way to commit!

and way to adopt a dog from a rescue! hooray!

  10. She is precious!! I didn't crate train my puppy but I've heard that is a great way to do it :) I just always took her out after she woke up and after she ate/drank and praised her when she went! Now, she always lets us know when she needs to go out by whining or sitting by the back door :)

  11. sooooo gorgeous, well done Mara!!! best of luck :)

  12. Oh my gosh Mara she is SOOOO cute! Congrats!

Stay strong on the crate training. I know it's hard but I promise it'll be worth it in the end.

Also, have plenty of toys for her and take her on FREQUENT potty breaks.

  16. yayayayyaya!!!! congrats mara she's adorable!!! i have lots of tips and advice!
good job crate training! at night but a hot water bottle in a sock and put it in the crate with her. worked wonders with my dog.
don't let her chew on things that look like things she's not allowed to chew. like don't buy a chew toy that looks like a shoe.
    we're going

  17. hahahha i'm watching tv and the girl said "we're going..." and i guess i typed that into the comment i was writing you.

  18. Oh my goodness----ADORABLE!! My boyfriend's puppy just turned one-year-old, so I remember that round, fur-ball stage well. Random "tip": don't feed her table scraps, ever. Then she will never be a beggar around the table. We've given Arwen a smidgen of steak before, but only after dinner and nowhere near the table so she doesn't associate the two! I think obedience classes at somewhere like PetSmart are definitely helpful. I'm sure you'll be great---puppies are a lot of work, but also SO much fun! We definitely want another one (now that we'll be living together), but maybe not for awhile...need this one to grow up a little more first!).

  24. Aaaw Mara, Ginger is just precious :-) so adorable, and good for you for going through petfinder. we just got a little one through the seattle humane society, his name is homie and he's a gem. he's already potty trained at 12 wks and 2 wks with him.. well almost! we had an accident a couple of days ago, but he learned REALLY quickly becuase I MADE SURE to always have treats with me and throw him a party if he didn't go. plus i keep him on a leash in thehouse especially if he doesnt 1 & 2 outside. if he does both i give him a little more freedom for about an hour. anywya, thats all i got! :) so excited for you!

    ReplyDelete
  25. oh my goodness, she is sooooo adorable! we rescued winslo when he was 8 months old, so we didn't have to deal with the whole potty/crate training thing. we were his 4th home in 8 months, though, so he had some major league abandonment issues. he was already trained to stay off furniture, but we're suckers so that was gone in days!!

i am all about leash training EARLY. we didn't get a chance to, and undoing his urge to pull us all over has been awful. but worth it in the end. best advice - just enjoy her!! so cute!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. She's beautiful! Congratulations! You're going to be a great mama to her! :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. She is adorable!!!
The first night is THE hardest...it does get better :)-

Each puppy is different in training, so my advice would be...GO PLAY!

    ReplyDelete
  28. OH. GOODNESS. Congrats Mara!! She's so adorable!!!

Take millions of photos, because once they get big, you'll lovelovelove looking back on them!

Stay strong with the crate! They really are a great tool for training, and they don't have to stay in them forever! Once she's older, you can wean her out of it if you want! Most of the times, dogs really warm up to them and use them as their safe place, though!

Also, stay strong with only giving puppy food and puppy treats! Their little faces will get to you, but it's so much healthier for them to not get table scraps! Although Sabey does come up occasionally, he's usually pretty good now and goes to get a toy if we tell him no.

Enjoy every moment, pretty lady! It's such a fun experience. I never understood crazy dog people until I became one!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. she's adorable!
    congrats mara!
i've always thought that puppies and kittens were much harder than babies - with babies you can at least throw them on the tit to comfort them... can't really do that with an animal ;-)
good luck! i hope you get some rest tonight.
    xx

  30. cute cute puppy! Try not to leave the puppy in its crate all the time! I always cringe when I see dogs being left in crates and cages all day long....

have a fun time with the puppy! Its sooo darn cute and i love the name ginger!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Oh she is SO SWEET! She reminds me of my yellow lab Abbey Road who sadly, is all grown up now. Beautiful Mara!

    ReplyDelete
  32. adorable! I adopted a puppy last december, and it'll get even tougher! make sure to sign her up for trainer as soon as she's old enough, it'll really help to socialize her and it'll help with her terrible twos (whenever she gets to that point). keep potty training pads everywhere, just in case. start rewarding her for good behavior now with treats, it will really help later on! and most importantly, love her and be patient :)

    xo good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  33. oh my word! she is the cutest thing! CONGRATS!!

    xo

    ReplyDelete
  34. Ginger is precious!! For Coco, we cover her crate with a blanket. She barks less because she thinks its dark and we are asleep and not having fun without her. :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. she is adorable!!! omg too cute!! she will get used to all the change and soon she will be super duper playful!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Congratulations on your new puppy! She's gorgeous!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Is she a Golden Retriever?! Abbey is a Golden, we are in LOVE with them over here. I definitely recommend crate training, also reading up/watching some of Cesar Milan's stuff on the internet.. he's really smart when it comes to the dog/human relationship. Also, like a baby you have to have a routine... she should sleep in the crate, be in the crate when you're gone, etc. routinely or else it will seem like a punishment for her.

We're very "into" dogs over here, haha if you need anything else feel free to email me, but i'm sure you guys will be beautiful wonderful puppy parents! :D

    ReplyDelete
  38. Awesome! Congrats on taking the plunge. She is so adorable. You are both going to be such great parents.

    :) Marcie

    ReplyDelete
  39. oh my goodness, YAY! congratulations, dear. :) she's SO CUTE! aaww, precious little thing. <3

i would say routine. routine. routine. we feed our dogs at the same times every single day - they'll go and sit by their bowls and wait. they also have outside potty breaks at the same times everyday... and now they will sit and wait by the door at exactly the right time and wait for someone to let them out, and when we say "inside!" they know it's time to come in the house. (they also know what the word "treat" means. ;) jack, especially... if he does something good he'll go sit and wait underneath the counter where the treat jar is. haha!)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Yay! I know you have wanted one for so long! Congrats! Here are my tips. Keep the crate as so as you can. She should really only be able to turn around and lay down. If you give her to much space she will go to the bathroom in it. Take her out as soon as you let her out of the crate. I picked Logan up right away. Bring treats! Pottys get treats! You can use pieces of food if you she seems to love her treats more than her food. Keep her close. Someone mentioned keeping a leash on her and I think thats a good idea if your on the computer or watching a movie. Thats when she will wonder away and pee on your favorite shoe! Pick up everything. We had a rule if it was on the floor it was Logans. We picked up everything. They make this lemon bitter spray that we used when he started chewing furniture worked liked a charm. Also for the biting. We would just spray a little on our hand. Oh and they do have to go to the bathroom a lot so if you she has to go in the middle of the night take her out but then right in the crate! No playing! She has to learn that just because we go out doesn't mean its time to play. Ans if she won't eat her food soak it in hot water until it gets a little soft then poor out the water. She will eat it up! We still do this for Logan. . he's still my baby.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Ohhhhh how cute!!!!!! She's adorable Mara, congratulations!! Sorry that I don't have much advice, but everything we did with Oreo was the opposite of what they normally tell you to do, haha! She's been sleeping in our beds and eating our table scraps for years. Good luck with the training!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. CUTER pictures? i don't think they could get much cuter than this!! she is ADORABLE!!! now i'm very jealous :)

  46. Oh my goshhhh, what a sweetie! I'm so excited for you! I've been wanting a puppy for so long! Can't wait to see more photos!:)

    ReplyDelete
  47. omg too cute!!! I've said it before and I'll say it again (not here obviously), but for me-the puppy stage was hell! haha not to scare you though. I had the hardest time getting her house trained, and better yet, it was winter when I got my dog. I would take her out, stand there forever (not too long, she and I would get cold), not do her job and then less than 5 minutes later in the house, do something! I cried home to my parents many times hahah She also bit and chewed everything in site. And she's got the teeth of a shark or something lol she got through stuff fast! And lastly, crate training was the best decision for me..stick with it! It totally becomes their safe place. She still gets crated when I go out/go to class, even though I'm sure I could leave her out, but she sleeps with me at night now :)

I'm pretty sure I made having a puppy sound awful, but once they get past that stage, it's really the best thing ever! She's a perfect little angel now and I couldn't imagine not having a dog. Ok, well that's enough :) I'm sure she's already got you wrapped around her little paw!

    ReplyDelete
  48. So cute Mara!!! I am aching to get a dog ... and I think this summer I will be getting one. Ginger is adorable!!! As for Summer Kitchen on College yes it is new and incredible the next time you are in the area let me know and we can have a little blogger lunch there ... cupcakes on me!! XO

    ReplyDelete
  49. She is soo cute! Is she a goldendoodle or laberdoodle? I don't really know how to spell either of those but I'm sure you understand what I'm saying! My only tip is sometimes tough love works! We took our yellow lab (14 years ago..she just died a few months ago) out at first during the night but then we just let her cry in a her kennel in a room across the house and she learned really fast to hold her bladder through the night:) I think we put a ticking stuffed bear in with her to sounds like a heartbeat.

Sounds like perfect timing for you and great practice in being a mom:)

You should move to Oregon! Or at least come visit!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Aw!! super cute!
I have crate trained all my dogs.. just be consistant!!
you will have a blast with your puppy!!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Awww Ginger is absolutely adorable Mara, I'm so happy for you! I unfortunately don't know too much about dogs because I never lived with one growing up or otherwise. I hope to have one someday though! Hope she has an easier night tonight!

    ReplyDelete
  52. mara, she's adorable!! we used 'the art of raising a puppy' by the monks of new skete. steve swears by it. it has been great but i think all puppies have their accidents (even later on). for sure though, let her know who is boss! usually by putting them on their side and getting on top of them while making eye contact. sounds silly but i think it is really important!

best of luck. dogs are the best!!!!!

  53. Oh my goodness, Ginger is a cutie and how adorable is Matthew with her...you are both going to make such lovely doggie parents! :) Enjoy it!

  54. Congrats on your new addition, she is adoreable!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Ginger is adorable! congrats on the new puppy! and good job on staying strong and not taking her into bed... we were SO not that strong and our pup Hazel is totally spoiled because of it. potty training was tough with us because we live in an apartment and moved twice while she was still a pup. but she has gotten a lot better. (she's 2 now). and luckily, the chewing everything phase has stopped! :) (just make sure you put things out of reach until Ginger is older, too! they really do like to chew anything in sight!)

    ReplyDelete
  56. Oh my gosh oh my gosh! She is perfect! Is she a Golden or a lab? I am so so so excited for you--I plan on having no babies and lots of puppies so I am about as excited for you as if you were having a baby! Can we have pictures of her every day? For me to live vicariously?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Ohhhhh she is SO sweet!
Well you know I have just finished the "puppy" stage... although I think that lasts for about two years. The good news is that the late, whining, crying nights don't last long at all. I think it was a week and we were good to go... Crate training is the way to go as far as I am concerned too. I am SO tempted to bring Wilson into my bed every once and awhile but I think that would be bad for everyone!

Congrats on your beautiful baby girl :) Love her!

    ReplyDelete
  58. what a gorgeous pupp!! awwww, lv her facial expression. doggies are the best!! x

  59. OMG . . .Ginger is PRECIOUS!!!! Love her!!

  60. Too cute! I'm mega jealous!

And good for you for staying strong and leaving her in her crate, that'll make things easier soon!

    ReplyDelete
  61. wow! people have so much to say about puppies, particularly "crate training," a term i have NEVER heard of before just now! but what i do have to say is...SHE IS SO CUTE! and best of all, you got her from a rescue rather than a breeder. kudos to you for being smart and humane enough to do the right thing and being an animal lover through and through. i can't wait to see the adventures this little darling takes you on! i can tell she is going to playful, loveable, beautiful and just basically PERFECT. if i ever did get a puppy (all these technical training terms are freaking me out, cats are soooo easy!) i'd want one that looks like her!

    ReplyDelete
  62. She is gorgeous! I wish I had room for a puppy :)

Kisses and enjoy your new baby :)

  69. Aaah that's so a adorable puppy! Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  70. i know what you mean about the crate training...but stick w/it. hubs would panic and have to leave the room b/c it made him sad....haha...he finally got over it.
after a while he (our momo) would love to go in and i'd find him sitting in it w/his lovey during the day! haha

ohhh i have a great tip...depending on how smart ur dog is depends on how quick...it took our dog about 1 month...

put a tiny bird bell on the back door down low...(not too low the puppy will grow)
every single freaking time you go out the door to potty....ring the bell and say go outside.....it seems a pain until that one day...you hear a tinkle tinkle and realize he hit it himself to signal to go out. it's awesome. it helps train them not to bark to go out. we used the bell for about a year...now he's 3 and just sits at the door..haha

he would crack me up...he would go ring it and run away....i'd come over to let him out and he'd be gone. dogs really do have a sense of humor!

    ReplyDelete
  71. awww what a cutie!! love the name too!

the first night we brought daisy back she cried, howled and scratched at the door... I was so upset but managed to not go down & every night after that was better!! They say to ignore their barkings cos if u respond they'll think thats how to get attention...easier said than done eh!?

only other tip is to buy loads of toys so when the teething starts they take it out them rather than your furniture!

looking forward to more pictures!:) xx

    ReplyDelete
  78. Mara! She is so cute!!!! I have had dogs growing up, but we never kept them in crates or kennels at night. but it is easier later on if you teach them what is wrong and right while they are a puppy. we actually somehow trained our toy poodle to bark at the door when she had to go out. I think when she was a puppy we would take her to the door, set her down and ask her if she had to go potty. and when she would bark, we would praise and open the door and take her out! we'll have to talk. I might have more for ya.

Just a general tip: start teaching her commands now; as puppies they learn really fast and always keep it with them

  89. oh my gosh, i can't even begin to describe how in love with ginger i am! is she a golden retriever?

when chris and i were first married, he brought a puppy home, and the first few nights were tough because scooter (the puppy) wimpered most of the night. we kept him in his crate, but discovered that he quit if his crate was beside the bed. after about a week, he was bale to sleep in his crate on the opposite side of the room. it's so sad when they wimper, and it made me feel like a jerk for having him away from his mom :(

  90. she is adorable!! thats the kind of dog i hope to get once im FINALLY able to get one (which will probably be awhile). ive grown up dogs though, and i miss having one always around.
it seems like you have a lot of good puppy advice :) the whole potty training thing is a beast, but just take her out often in the beginning and give her treats when she does what shes suppose to and hopefully she'll latch on soon. thats probably the main thing. a friend of mine got a dog, but never took the time to potty train it-it still goes inside (2 years later...ick)!
youre right, pups are a lot of work, i cant even imagine what a child would be like..ha
i hope you enjoy your time with your new, precious little puppy!! sooo happy for ya!

  101. Ohmigosh no! Mara you got a puppy? Please, please, please can we share?! I have wanted a dog for my ENTIRE life, and have been saying so even more lately (read: every single day my mother is bombarded with "I want a dog," followed by a puppy dog look from me, at least seven times a day). Ah, Ginger is the cutest thing ever!!!!!! Congratulations, congratulations, congratulations!!!! :)

  103. ohmygosh! Ginger is sooo adorable. :) accidents will definiely happen... but the more consistant your are with training the faster she'll learn. My hubby was great a training our little Maltipoo. Dogs are the best aren't they.. I love when you come home and they are there to greet you with a 'smile' on their face and their tails wagging like crazy!! it's really, love at first sight!
