take me out to the ballgame

May 10, 2010

If I was a little boy I would hate baseball! It seems like so much pressure. All eyes are on you and if you strike out {which I definitely would} you'd feel terrible. That's why I played soccer because it was more of a team sport and there wasn't all that pressure. It was so great to see Matthew's nephew Jonathan play the last time we were down though. We got to sit in the stands, eat colored goldfish and popcorn and cheer him on. And he got a hit!!

Did you play sports when you were little? I'm curious to know whether softball/baseball was as bad as I think it was.

This weekend wasn't what I hoped. My sore throat escalated into me being sick, so I spent a lot of time in bed sleeping and reading. I didn't do the things I wanted to do with my mom for Mother's Day but we're going to celebrate when my brother gets home. I hope your weekends were more eventful than mine!

  1. I played soccer and I HATED all the pressure. But I dance now and for some reason that's totally different.

  2. Hope you're feeling better! Matt's niece and nephew are soo cute!! I played softball for a season and then switched to lacrosse, which was so much more fun!

  3. I played softball for 13 years. I loved it so much. The pressure of striking out, etc didn't really get to me until I was in high school, because everyone else was so good.. when you're really little everyone is pretty much the same!

  4. I did gymnastics, ballet, soccer, basketball (my favorite), cheerleading and finally track/cross-country in high school...Feel better soon! I've been getting sick a lot too and it sucks so much :(

  5. I played softball for a few years but I'm not much of a team sport kind of girl and if I join things I have the habit of making excuses so I don't have to go (this happened with Girl Scouts too so it wasn't just sports). But when I did play I never felt pressure, it was just a game to play that took up some of my time.

My brother played t-ball and baseball and he put a lot of pressure on himself. He used to be a VERY sore loser and he would throw a tantrum if he didn't do well.

Thank goodness he grew out of that!

  6. I played both soccer and softball, and I loved them both! baseball is personally my favorite sport :)

  7. Sorry you weren't feeling well. Lots of rest and reading hopefully did the trick and you're feeling better now.

When I was a kid, I hated pretty much all sports! Especially volleyball. I lived in fear of that ball whacking me in the face (which it did on more than one occasion!)

I kind of liked badminton though!

  8. I absolutely HATED playing baseball in school! We had a 6th grade game against the teachers, and that was so much pressure. And we of course had to play it every year through middle school and half of high school.
I always got a hit but I could never run fast enough :(

  9. Poor girl! Hope you're feeling better soon. Nothing worse than being sick over a weekend.

  10. aww Mara I hope you feel better. Matthew's niece is the CUTEST! love her pink sunglasses :)
i sound like such a geek, but i never played sports in school. my parents never involved me in any when i was young, and i never took an interest to them throughout jr high or high school. in gym though i always loved lacrosse, shooting hoops, and field hockey!

    ReplyDelete
  11. I was a soccer girl too!! I played softball for a few years when I was young, and let's just say I was not cut out for it! ;)

  12. How cute and it looks like you all had a fun time! :)

I love watching my nephew play baseball, but I have to say that I'm with you on the not wanting to play if I was a boy...I even disliked softball in gym class...hehe!

Great pictures...especially the last action shot!

  13. Love these photos! Matt's neice has the cutest sunglasses. I played Softball and Soccer among lots of other sports & activites. Softball was definitely stressful and striking out was always such a let down. I don't miss it at all haha. I hope you are feeling better!

  15. I am absolutely terrible at being competitive so I never played any team sports. I don't think I would have taken to losing very well. Oh and also...the PRESSURE! I could never deal!

So great of you guys to get out there and support him!

  16. just want you to know that you're the sweetest person on earth. thanks for being so kind. <3

I just watched my little brother play baseball this past weekend. It was so cute b/c he kept looking to see if I was watching him:)
    Have a lovely evening!

  18. I played soccer for a few years and T-ball when I was young. I don't really have strong memories or feelings, either positive or negative. So I guess it was more like a non-experience in my life!

I love your sunglasses! Where are they from?

  19. oh man, i got sick, too! what a boring last few days, stuck in bed with a lifetime supply of tissues and cold medicine. ugh. not good times. i hope you feel better soon, dear!

  20. What a lovely day you had!!! I can totally relate - baseball is difficult. My husband used to play and he does it so well, but it's nerve wrecking, I think.

My daughter also plays soccer and she loves it. Hope you're feeling better now!

  21. The hubs played pro...and if the dude doesn't play baseball, he's gonna be crushed. I'm all for soccer. HA!

  23. I love watching ballgames too except that I really make a scene when I shout. Hahaha! I used to play baseball, softball, basketball when I was younger but sadly my hand and eye coordination sucks so I stuck with swimming.

I'm so glad that Jonathan got a hit. xoxo

  24. Like Leah, I like being at the game with friends. I was more into non contact sports like swimming. I'd love to get any future little guy into baseball, but we'll see!

  25. I don't understand baseball... i went to a game during the olympics in Athens with my american best friend and didn't see the point. anyway, I love these photos, soooo cute!!

softball is about the one sport i didn't want to ever play!! you are right.. it would be so nerve wracking! everyone would know it was your fault. haha.
that little girl is precious! love her sassy glasses!!

  29. I don't think sports are as a big a deal over here as in the US - I did play a lethal game of defence in hockey and was in the form netball team, but nothing serious. I dedicated my sporty efforts, such as they were, towards horse riding.

Matthew's niece and nephews are adorable!

  30. Matt's niece is such a cutie! I hope you feel better soon xx

  33. I played softball for a season. wasn't very good...or atleast the team wasn't. but I love watching it! I like how there are some times where the games is a bit slow and then times when all this stuff is happening. keeps you on your toes, I think.

  34. What a fun outing! It is always so much better when you are rooting for someone you know! :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. my dad once tried to teach me to play softball...i quickly decided that i preferred dance! you're so right, too much pressure! this looks like a fun little outing though!

    hope you're feeling better! xox

  36. Awww! I can't wait till my nephews get old enough to play T-ball :) Only a few more years to go!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Its funny how nervous you can get for the kids playing a game. My niece had a dance recital on Sunday and I was SO nervous for her. When she did great I actually teared up (M is still making fun of me).

    ReplyDelete
  38. Aw those are such cute picture, and it's scary- the little blond girl looks exactly like my sisters child... hehe.
I only did gymnastics when I was little, but I only liked the team gymnastics- I hated the the things you had to do by yourself... :P

    ReplyDelete
  39. I played basketball in sixth grade and got maybe two goals...I was awful and I hated it. Which is why I will not force my children to play. I may force them to learn the piano, but never sports.

    ReplyDelete
  40. i hated sports when i was a kid! i was really small and clumsy and i had braces. balls always seemed to hit me in the head, breaking my glasses or cutting my lip. even as an adult, i get all anxious thinking about it. eek!

but those kids are adorable! such sweet pictures!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Haha, I played softball from 6th to 8th grades and hated/loved it. Every time the girl who was one ahead of me in the lineup was up at bat, my stomach would get a beating from the butterflies so bad I would get dizzy! I usually ended up taking a walk, so I really had no reason to worry, but I did. I actually got pretty good by 8th grade but still nothing could chase away those butterflies.

But I love watching professional baseball (go Mets!), and enjoy playing a competitive game of wiffle ball! So I guess it didn't ruin the sport forever for me...

    ReplyDelete
  42. Cute photos!! I used to play softball and soccer for years while growing up and then I ran track and played field hockey through high school! I miss playing team sports!!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I didn't play sports when i was that little. I started playing sports more when i hit 13. I got so involved into playing soccer, table tennis, tennis and floorball. And now? Not anymore. Boo.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I was a horrendous baseball player. I struck out a lot...I didn't have the necessary concentration, I think. I was a (slightly) better pitcher and much better basketball player.

Gorgeous photos. I hope you feel better soon!

  45. So so cute! I loved playing in little league when I was younger!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Such cute pics! I played soccer and I danced. I liked dance more... I am not very aggressive!

i was always so shy when i was little, i never played sports! i wish i had now, it's so much fun to get out there :)

  49. Hope you're feeling a lot better today. Love the pics, and your sunglasses! :D
Didn't really do sports unless when we had PE which involved a lot of Baseball-like activities, soccer and field hockey. Yes, even as a girl. Then I started to row...yes, tiny me in a row boat...and it felt great. My legs and arms always hurt but it still felt so good. :) haha.

    Have a great day Mara.

    xoxo

    ReplyDelete
  52. i love baseball, watching and playing. but when i was little i was on an all-boys team and the pressure was way too much for me (i didn't even last the whole season). now i prefer to play for fun, and watching a game is even better!

    ReplyDelete
  53. omg such cuties!! :) Hope you are having a nice week Mara!

    ReplyDelete
  54. sports were my nemesis when I was young...and kind of now. I have really bad coordination and never do well. I hated when we had to play softball at school, because I more likely got hit with the ball than the ball getting hit. I think kickball was the only one I didn't mind. haha, I hope you feel better!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Haha! I have NEVER been able to play team sports for the sheer fact that I think I would collapse from all the pressure! You look absolutely adorable, Mara. Now the question is...did Jonathan's team win?

    Get well soon!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  56. baseball! BLEH! i was (and am) HORRIBLE AT SPORTS, so i sure wasn't a fan of it as a kid. not really as an adult either, unless i am at a game and the weather is nice and the food and the booze are handy!

  57. Such cute pics! I was rubblish at sports at school - dreaded it! xx

  58. Awh, SO sweet! I hated all sports as a kid. I thought it was against child labor laws when they made us play in school.

    ReplyDelete
  59. How cute Mara, Matt's niece and nephew are so adorable!

Confession: I did play Baseball as a kid and I was the only girl on the team ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  60. Aw, it's so cute to watch little ones play sports! My nieces all play softball or tee-ball, and its adorable!

When I was little, I danced and swam. Dance is more of a team thing, and super fun, because most of the time we had crazy costumes for the recitals. And although swimming is an individual sport, I loved it because when you're in the water, you can't hear anyone screaming or anything like that! And it was up to you to push yourself to be better!

  61. Aww too cute!

  63. I love watching kids sporting events! I played softball for a while and got a big old knot in my stomach every time I stepped up to the plate and played in the outfield and just prayed nothing would come my way.. not my favorite sport! I got into horses and wakeboarding and find I do better with stuff like that then team sports..

  65. I hope you feel better! I'm at home sick too :( and I have to leave on a trip tomorrow. Sigh

Anyway, it looks like fun! I love watching kids play sport. I played softball for about 2 years when I was in primary school and I liked it but I didn't continue on into high school.

  81. Aw, how cute! I LOVE baseball! My bro played when we were little, and I played softball for a good 10 years. I adored every minute of it, and met my very best friends. It could be a lot of pressure when you're up at bat, but that's part of the fun!

    Hope you're feeling better!

    ReplyDelete
  82. I played baseball and softball, basketball, and soccer. When I was much younger I remember feeling the pressure of not messing up but the kids on the team are usually supportive. Everyone messes up or doesn't do as good as they want at least once. I think as long as a kid is involved in sports at such a young age it ends up building so much character and social skills.

  86. What a great post ... I love all of the sunnies in this post ... and the pink ones are adorable. I played soccer, basketball and swam but my main sport was golf ... I started when I was 6, played in summer tournaments from the age of 6-17, in high school and one year of college and then coached. I love sports, however competing always made me anxious ... I love being an "adult" and playing in rec leagues now ... no pressure, fun and simply great. Sending you a hug!! XO
