Looks like any old bun right? Wrong! I learned a little secret from my sister-in-law Rachel and I thought I'd share it with you. It's this thing called the doughnut bun, or the doughnut sock, or the sock bun. You can choose any name you want but basically it's a trick to creating the perfect full bun! I tried this in December {for this outfit post}, but forgot about these photos until now. So if you're seeing this tutorial for the millionth time, I'm sorry! But if you're seeing it for the first time, yay! Get ready to learn something new!

Have you heard of this trick before? Has it worked on your hair? As my hair has gotten longer it's harder to hold a bun style, unless I use a ton of bobby pins, so this idea has been helpful! I love buns that will stay put all day with no maintenance. I hope my steps make sense. If not, leave a comment and I'll address it!
I hope you all have a great weekend!!

Please ignore my wrist brace! It's the result of too much computer use :(

I have been meaning to try this for weeks now...it looks beautiful on you! Lovely tutorial! :)
ReplyDeleteOhh I love this!! Looks great on you and I think I'll have to try it! :)
ReplyDeletePIECE OF CAKE. PEACE OF MIND.
I love this sock bun, I usually do this when don't have much time to style my hair for work. luv it...

I use the sock bun to curl my hair by sleeping in it over night if I want curls in the morning (wash hair, mostly dry until just damp and then put in sock) or I wear it through the day for curls in the evening. I blogged about my results if you're interested (here). It's such a great look, and it looks fab on you.
ReplyDeleteI definitely need to try this out!

I saw a video with this and wanted to try it for ages, I'll have to do it sometime, it looks so good on you =) And hope your wrist feels better soon =(

i just tried it.. great trick! i just tie my hair in a pony tail before I do it, since I too have a lot of hair and it's much easier to hold it that way! :)

I know about this one! It's a great way to get a perfect bun every time :)
ReplyDeleteAnd it gives a bit of a volume so it looks like your hair is much more thicker! I love it :)
why isn't my hair longer?
ReplyDeleteI keep seeing this tutorial everywhere and I really need to finally try it - I think this weekend is the perfect time! :)

Love that technique ! I have very fine hair and it's actually the only way to get a decent bun ! And it stay's put all day !
ReplyDeletethat is soo cool ... and just for a moment I wish I had long hair.
ReplyDeleteI have tried this tons and tons of times with no success. I thought my hair was too long, but you've proven me wrong there, so I'll have to try again! The step I seemed to be missing was to spread the hair before I started to roll and tuck. I'll have to try that next time.
ReplyDeleteOh my, I thought at first it was just going to be this tedious bobby-pinning thing with your head, but then you mentioned a sock and rolling it up, and now I can't believe it-- it's such a funny but creative idea! It looks really nice on you! I figure since my hair is too curly, it wouldn't work, but good luck to all with nice, straight hair!

Eeep! Love this tutorial! So helpful! I think my hair is too short right now but I'm growing it out so I can't wait to try this! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for this! My students always come to me with a sock, expecting me to do their hair. I'm such a traditional ballerina where I go, "huh? Give me some bobby pins!" Good to know!
ReplyDeleteVery interesting, may have to try this when my hair gets long!
ReplyDeleteI've seen this trick so many times and i still haven't tried it! Going home and doing it now! :)

How neat! Thank you for posting this:)
ReplyDeletewould this work on my hair? i should mention i have 100 lbs of it. but your hair is pretty long and thick-looking, too...so maybe!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe I haven't seen this before. Thanks for posting it! I'm going to try it very soon. Do you know if it works at all on damp hair?
ReplyDeleteHa! This is so great. I often wear big buns, but my process requires a lot of back combing, teasing and smoothing. This would probably cut that prep time by half an hour!

this is such a great idea! the high messy bun has been my go-to lately, but i like the idea of using a sock to give it a more put-together ballerina look! thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteA very random question...what foundation are you using (if any)? Your skin is simply stunning!

This is GENIUS! I have such thin hair, and I never am able to get nice buns, but I'm trying this like now!
ReplyDeleteI knew I wasn't the only one who did this! :-P
ReplyDeleteYes! I LOVE the sock bun! I actually found it easier when my hair was super long! And better yet, H&M not has little mesh "doughnuts" that are nicer (in my mind) to use on top of your head than my husband's tube socks (in my case, LOL). They have ones for blondes and ones for brunettes!
ReplyDeletexx Vivian @ http://diamondsandtulle.blogspot.com
I love it.. Just tried it. My hair is much shorter then yours, but it still works,
ReplyDeleteThanks
Wow...I just tried this for the first time and it worker great! It was SO easy! I have long fine hair and was afraid it wouldn't hold, but it holds great. My hair looks beautiful and thick styled in this bun. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI posted a picture of my bun on my blog and included a link to this post so my followers could learn too! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you!!
ReplyDeleteI like it easy and I will try to do it
