diy: the doughnut bun

February 17, 2012

Looks like any old bun right? Wrong! I learned a little secret from my sister-in-law Rachel and I thought I'd share it with you. It's this thing called the doughnut bun, or the doughnut sock, or the sock bun. You can choose any name you want but basically it's a trick to creating the perfect full bun! I tried this in December {for this outfit post}, but forgot about these photos until now. So if you're seeing this tutorial for the millionth time, I'm sorry! But if you're seeing it for the first time, yay! Get ready to learn something new!

Have you heard of this trick before? Has it worked on your hair? As my hair has gotten longer it's harder to hold a bun style, unless I use a ton of bobby pins, so this idea has been helpful! I love buns that will stay put all day with no maintenance. I hope my steps make sense. If not, leave a comment and I'll address it!

I hope you all have a great weekend!!

  4. I use the sock bun to curl my hair by sleeping in it over night if I want curls in the morning (wash hair, mostly dry until just damp and then put in sock) or I wear it through the day for curls in the evening. I blogged about my results if you're interested (here). It's such a great look, and it looks fab on you.

  6. i just tried it.. great trick! i just tie my hair in a pony tail before I do it, since I too have a lot of hair and it's much easier to hold it that way! :)

And it gives a bit of a volume so it looks like your hair is much more thicker! I love it :)

  11. that is soo cool ... and just for a moment I wish I had long hair.

  12. I have tried this tons and tons of times with no success. I thought my hair was too long, but you've proven me wrong there, so I'll have to try again! The step I seemed to be missing was to spread the hair before I started to roll and tuck. I'll have to try that next time.

  13. Oh my, I thought at first it was just going to be this tedious bobby-pinning thing with your head, but then you mentioned a sock and rolling it up, and now I can't believe it-- it's such a funny but creative idea! It looks really nice on you! I figure since my hair is too curly, it wouldn't work, but good luck to all with nice, straight hair!

  16. Thank you for this! My students always come to me with a sock, expecting me to do their hair. I'm such a traditional ballerina where I go, "huh? Give me some bobby pins!" Good to know!

  31. would this work on my hair? i should mention i have 100 lbs of it. but your hair is pretty long and thick-looking, too...so maybe!

  32. I can't believe I haven't seen this before. Thanks for posting it! I'm going to try it very soon. Do you know if it works at all on damp hair?

  33. Ha! This is so great. I often wear big buns, but my process requires a lot of back combing, teasing and smoothing. This would probably cut that prep time by half an hour!

  45. I knew I wasn't the only one who did this! :-P

  46. Yes! I LOVE the sock bun! I actually found it easier when my hair was super long! And better yet, H&M not has little mesh "doughnuts" that are nicer (in my mind) to use on top of your head than my husband's tube socks (in my case, LOL). They have ones for blondes and ones for brunettes!
