diy: blue table lamps

May 31, 2012

I've always loved interior design so I couldn't wait to move into an apartment with Matthew and start decorating. I've found that the challenge is oftentimes finding exactly what you want, and for the right price. For example, I've had my eye on these pale blue lamps for our bedroom. The problem was that they were almost $200 a piece! I tried finding a cheaper one but after months of searching I just wanted to have our bedroom put together. I decided if I couldn't find it, maybe I could make it. So I headed to IKEA, the most affordable home furnishing store, and picked up two white lamps. $20 each. This was an easy and cheap DIY, which won't make me feel bad if a year down the road I want different color lamps!

SUPPLIES
2 lamps
1 tube of paint, color of choice
1 Acrylic Sealer {I used the Modge Podge one from this DIY}
1 paint brush

DIRECTIONS
Tape of parts of lamp you don't want to be painted {cords, neck, etc.}
Apply 1 coat of paint, let dry and then apply second coat.
After 24 hours spray sealer. Let dry before assembling and placing in desired location.

Easy, Cheap, and Cute. The DIY Trifecta in my book!

look book: girl on fire

May 30, 2012

Another outfit from Hawaii! These photos were taken right before sunset so that explains the fiery look on one side of my body. I miss how easy it was to get dressed in Hawaii. I brought my curling iron but I didn't use it once. Even if it wasn't so warm I wouldn't have wanted to use it. It was easier to just take a shower after the beach, grab a sweater and go. No standing in front of the closet for 5 full minutes, wondering what to wear. No time spent blowdrying, straightening or curling. Since I've been home I've tried to adopt this lackadaisical way of prepping, especially on the weekends. It saves so much time and makes for a more enjoyable morning! Plus there's no, "Come on! Let's go already,"s from the husband!

recipe: chocolate truffle tart

May 29, 2012

Eden's sister Bethany made this delicious chocolate tart for Eden's baby shower. I thought she said the recipe was from the Flour Bakery cookbook so I was determined to make it. I looked for the recipe online, since I didn't have the cookbook, and when I stumbled across this recipe, which was adapted from the original, I gave it a try. This recipe definitely wasn't the same as the one at the shower but it was equally delicious. The one I had tasted more like a flourless chocolate cake whereas this one has an almost pudding-like consistency. It's amazing though and I would definitely recommend giving it a try! It's rich and gooey and makes for a very impressive dessert! If you have it for a dinner party, you might want to make an extra for yourself because it will go fast!
I probably should have let the dough come together a little more in the mixer but it still worked out.

Chocolate Truffle Tart adapted from Joanne Chang’s “Flour: Spectacular Recipes from Boston’s Flour Bakery + Cafe”

INGREDIENTS for the tart shell:
1 stick (114g) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1/4 cup (50g) sugar
1/2 tsp kosher salt
1 cup (140g) unbleached all purpose flour
1 egg yolk
DIRECTIONS
1. In a mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream the butter, sugar, and salt for 2-3 minutes until pale and light. Scrape down the bowl with a rubber spatula. Add the flour and beat on low speed until the flour mixes with the butter-sugar mixture. Add the egg yolk and beat on low speed until the dough comes together.
2. Wrap the dough tightly in plastic wrap and chill for at least 1 hour. It will keep in the fridge for up to 5 days and in the freezer for 2 weeks.
3. Line a baking sheet with parchment and place a 10 inch tart ring on top (*mine was 9.5″, which was perfect). Remove the dough from the refrigerator and let sit for about 30 minutes. Using a rolling pin, flatten the dough into a disk about 1/2 inch thick. Lightly flour the work surface and sprinkle the dough with some flour. Roll into a circle about 12 inches in diameter and less than 1/4 inch thick.
4. Roll the dough circle around the pin and unroll it on top of the tart ring. Press the dough well into the bottom and sides of the ring, using scraps to patch up tears or missing bits. Trim the edge of the dough so it is even with the rim of the ring.
5. Refrigerate the tart shell for at least 30 mins. Position a rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 350F. Bake for 30-35 minutes, until golden brown. Let cool to room temperature on a wire rack.
INGREDIENTS for the chocolate tart:
8oz (228g) bittersweet chocolate, at least 70%, finely chopped
3/4 cup (180g) heavy cream
1/2 cup (120g) milk
2 egg yolks
2 tbsp (28g) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1/4 tsp kosher salt
Pate Sucree 10-inch tart shell
1/4 cup (30g) dutch-processed cocoa
DIRECTIONS
1. Position a rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 350F.
2. Place the chocolate in a medium heatproof bowl. In a small saucepan, combine the cream and milk and scald over medium heat (do not boil). Pour the hot cream mixture over the chocolate and let sit for about 1 minute, then whisk until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth. Slowly whisk in the egg yolks, one at a time. Add the butter and salt and whisk until incorporated.
3. Pour the chocolate mixture into the tart shell. Bake for about 15 minutes, or until the edges start to set and the middle is still a little wiggly- like Jell-O. Let cool on a wire rack for at least 2 hours, or up to 6 hours. Dust the top of the tart with cocoa just before serving. This tart is best at room temperature the day it’s made, but it can be store in the fridge for up to 1 day.

look book: a touch of lace

May 28, 2012

I'm a sucker for lace and this top makes it way too easy to lace-ify any outfit. I've been throwing it over tops and dresses and I love how it can transform an article of clothing to look new, different, and even more perfect.

This long Memorial Day Weekend was just what I needed. Matthew got back Friday afternoon from being out of town on business and it was nice to have a weekend to relax. We went to the gym, made yummy sandwhiches and smoothies for lunches, and went to watch a movie at the cemetery to celebrate a friend's birthday. The movie was Sabrina, with Audrey Hepburn, which made me super happy. I loved sitting under the stars, watching one of my favorite actresses and eating delicious homemade cookies. It was pretty close to perfect! How was your long weekend?

look book: paisley pant party

May 24, 2012

I would definitely consider myself to be a dress girl. While I do love my comfy jeans, skirts and dresses are more me. However, in the effort to break out of some of my self-imposed fashion rules, I surprised myself by picking up a pair of paisley printed pants. They're fun and different and a little/a lot out of my comfort zone. Yet, I kind of love them and I'm already seeing multiple outfits I can wear with them. Hooray for spontaneity!

Happy Thursday!

adventures in maui: north shore

May 23, 2012

Since Matthew and I stayed on the south side of the island we didn't travel up to the north shore as frequently but we did make a couple trips based around the food. My parents went to Maui earlier this year and came back with enough food recommendations to keep us busy the whole trip. One place we were dying to try was Flatbread Company, an all natural, wood-burning pizza place in Paia. Matthew, in particular, is a connoisseur of pizza pies so he needed to be the judge. Verdict: a big yummy hit! We also went on a long, wild, slightly life-threatening drive for the best banana bread in the world. I have to  say it was worth it though! On our final night we had an incredible dinner that thinking about it now makes my mouth water. We went to Mama's Fish House and ate our favorite meal on the island. It was a special dinner, celebrating our anniversary, and everyone in the restaurant was so sweet and congratulatory. We had a card at our table, the manager gave Matthew a lei to give to me, and everyone offered to take photos. The whole night felt perfect and slightly magical. Hawaii does have major charm! I'm looking forward to going back one day!

This last photo was taken on our last night in Maui, which also happened to be our one year anniversary
I'm so lucky to be married to this wonderful and handsome guy and grateful for the opportunity to travel to Hawaii to celebrate our special milestone.

Favorite Spots on the North Shore (Paia)

Hotels: Paia Inn- my parents stayed there and loved it. Also, right next to Flatbread Co., so convenient!
Casual Food: Flatbread Company- order 1/2 and 1/2 so you can try different ones, Ono GelatoJulia's Banana Bread- not in Paia, but in Kahakuloa (Northwestern part of island), Mana Foods- amazing health food store, great selection, comparable to Whole Foods
Nice Restaurants: Mama's Fish House- best.dinner.ever, expensive but worth it, fish caught by local fisherman and specified with name and location
Things to Do: Paia is a great little hippie town to walk around and explore. There are great clothing boutiques and quirky little shops. I wish we had more time here.

If you've been to Maui before and have a favorite spot I didn't mention, feel free to leave it in a comment below!
There's always next time :)
