look book: locals only

September 26, 2012

It's starting to get a lot cooler in our beach town. The lighting is changing, the streets are less crowded and the wind is picking up {check out my baby hairs blowing all over the place!}. It's definitely not summer by the beach all the time, but nautical stripes, no matter the season, are always a go in my book.

recipe: roasted almonds with rosemary

September 25, 2012

One of my favorite fall snacks is roasted nuts. My Dad makes these all the time and I love going over to my parents' house and smelling them roasting in the oven. They're the perfect afternoon snack, healthy and flavorful!

Roasted Almonds with Rosemary

INGREDIENTS
1 1/2 cups whole almonds, unsalted
1/4 cup olive oil
1/2 tablespoon salt {you can always add more}
2 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary

DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 325 degrees and roast almonds for 10-15 minutes depending on size. Turn and check frequently.

Once toasted add olive oil. You want enough so that salt and rosemary will stick. Sprinkle salt and rosemary over nuts and stir.

Enjoy!

Do you have any favorite fall snacks?

look book: pencil it in

September 24, 2012

There's something about fall and pencil skirts. They just work together so well! I promise I'll try to not have too many pencil skirt outfit posts this season, although it's a little hard to say no to this style. They're slimming and J.Crew aka my home away from home has a plethora of options. Yep, pencil skirts make me use big words.

I hope you all had a wonderful first weekend of fall!

at work: Ruche Fall 2012 Lookbook

September 21, 2012

Ruche's Fall Lookbook, Kindred Spirits, launched last Monday and it's been so fun to see the response. The equestrian theme was very fitting for fall. I loved transitioning from summer styling to layering and adding rich textures of fall. Our two models {girl and horse} were amazing and such troopers. Even though it might look like it was a cool and breezy autumn day, it was actually around 106 degrees in the desert! Crazy, right? And there were no complaints!

You can see the full lookbook here and shop the lookbook here!

Some of my favorite items from the lookbook were the following:

Have a great weekend everyone!

I used to always get so excited when fall rolled around because of back to school shopping! Even though I went to a school that required uniforms, it was fun to buy some of the new essentials. look book: a fur thing

September 19, 2012

This button up from StyleMint is my new go to top. It's the perfect color combination for transitioning into fall. One day I can wear it with jeans shorts and another day I can wear it with a tweed skirt. Oh yeah and with the fur jacket. Almost forgot about that part of my outfit. It just blends in so well! Not noticeable at all, right?

recipe: pear breakfast muffins

September 18, 2012

Matthew brought me home a bag of fresh pears from the market and I've been so excited thinking of ways to use them. Pears are one of my favorite fruits! Of course, all my thinking led them to ripen quicker than I expected so I planned on making pear muffins as a Sunday breakfast treat. There's something so wonderfully intoxicating about the smell of baked pears, vanilla and spices floating around a home. It feels like fall is upon us, even though the weather outside might need to catch up!

Pear Breakfast Muffins
makes 12

INGREDIENTS
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  •   1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  •   1/2 tps. baking soda
  •   1/4 tsp. cinnamon
  •   1/4 tps. freshly grated nutmeg
  •   a pinch of salt
  •   2 large eggs
  •   1 tbsp. vanilla extract
  •   Lemon zest from 1 lemon
  •   3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  •   6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  •   1 cup unsweetened applesauce
  •   2 ripe pears, thinly sliced
  •   2 tbsp. cinnamon sugar

Special Equipment
1 12-cup muffin tin
stand or hand mixer

DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 400°F. Grease muffin pan.
Stir flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt in a bowl. Set aside.
Whisk eggs, vanilla extract, lemon zest, and brown sugar in a large mixing bowl until combined. Add the melted butter and whisk until the mixture is light, creamy and cohesive.
Mix in the applesauce at low speed, and then add the flour mixture in 3 batches, until well combined.
Pour batter into muffin cups. Lightly press pear slices into the top of the filled muffin cup and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.
Bake until golden, about 16-20 minutes. Rotate pan once in between.
Remove from oven, allow to cool for 10 minutes and then remove muffins from pan and cool slightly before serving.

Enjoy day of!

look book: very berry

September 17, 2012

One of my favorite ways to make a nice dress more casual is by layering a top underneath. I love this dress's beautiful berry color and I thought a blouse in a neutral color, with a small print, would work well underneath. Also, this purse's texture hints at a comparison. {Of course, I just noticed that now!}
